Miami Upsets Ohio State, advances to CFP Semifinals

Image
MIAMI, Florida ( FLAN 35 )-  The Miami Hurricanes had a fierce battle in Arlington, Texas at the 90th Goodyear Cotton Bowl against Ohio State. Last time these two played was for the National Championship in 2003 where Ohio State came out on top. Tonight is a different story as Miami wins moves on to the semifinals. Ohio State started off very slowly with only 9 total yards entering the second quarter, and this hurt them drastically.  Miami scored twice in the second quarter to give Miami a 14-0 lead going into half time. Bo Jackson got the first score of the game for OSU in the third quarter. Miami came to work in the fourth quarter defensively with multiple big stops and closing out the game with an interception.  Miami now waits for their opponent after tomorrow’s quarterfinals. It is safe to say that the U is back! Photos credit: Donovan Bridgeforth

OPINION: Dowdy's Look At The Dating Scene

Image
PORT SAINT LUCIE, Florida ( FLAN 35 )- Are you in your mid 20's to early 30's and beginning to think the dating scene is totally crushed? In a world full of online dating, it seems like less and less people are intimately connecting. It also feels like it has only been getting worse since Covid. Tinder is full of bots, and swiping and reading profiles is getting exhausting. I personally have been gathering the courage to flirt with women in public, but even getting to know someone is tough now. I feel like a lot of people are not looking for traditional love anymore, or have simply given up. Why is it that we do not communicate on a personal level in person anymore? Have we grown so small that everything has to be over text? I refuse to believe that. I think that since COVID, people have gotten accustomed to the social distancing ways that we were taught, and now our communication is taking a toll because of it.  Besides on a intimate level, are you having trouble finding fr...

FIU loses big to UTSA in the ServPro First Responders Bowl 57-20

Image
DALLAS, Texas ( FLAN 35 ) - Florida International travel for their match-up with UTSA at Gerald Ford Stadium in Dallas for the ServPro First Responders Bowl as both teams looked to end their seasons on a high note. The game started out with FIU getting on the birds early with back to back touchdowns to take a 14-0 lead in the first quarter. However the UTSA offense found its rhythm and was able to respond with back-to-back touchdowns of their own, knotting the game up at 14 a piece early. In the second quarter UTSA put up 17 unanswered points as FIU seemed to struggle to get the ground game going and the Panthers went into halftime 31-14. Both ball clubs came out of halftime with a battle ready mindset but the UTSA Road Runners proved to be too much to handle and ended up winning the game 57-20. Here are the top performers: Passing: J. Pesansky - 11/31 completions, 102 yards, 2 TDs, 1 INT Rushing: K. Owens - 8 carries, 36 yards Receiving: J. Stone - 4 catches, 28 yards

Giannis to Miami?

Image
PORT SAINT LUCIE, Florida ( FLAN 35 )- The Miami Heat find themselves in a sticky situation after a hot start to the season. The Heat are currently in ninth spot in the East, seven games behind first place. Miami is looking to win now, and their best chance at that would be getting Giannis from Milwaukee. Giannis has grown unhappy in the Cream City and is looking to relocate. Miami seems to be a top contender for this move. We have the talent and we have the first round picks to trade. What does Milwaukee want, and what is Miami looking to part ways with? As of right now the deal cannot contain Terry Rozier, we have plenty of young talent we can trade. It seems almost impossible to go without trading Tyler Herro, so who else will be partnered with him if shipped off to Milwaukee?

Canes Grind It Out, Knock Off Aggies 10–3 in CFP Showdown

Image
MIAMI, Florida ( FLAN 35 ) —  Miami proved it can win ugly — and win big — when it matters most. The Hurricanes edged the Aggies 10–3 on the road in a hard-nosed College Football Playoff matchup, leaning on defense, discipline, and timely execution to punch their ticket forward in the CFP. From the opening kick, it was clear points would be at a premium. Both defenses dominated the line of scrimmage, limiting explosive plays and forcing long, grinding drives. Miami struck first with a field goal after a methodical opening possession, setting the tone for a night defined by patience rather than flash. The game’s only touchdown came late in the second quarter, when Miami capitalized on field position and finished the drive with a short scoring strike, giving the Canes a 10–0 lead heading into halftime. From there, the Hurricanes’ defense took over. The Aggies managed just one field goal in the second half, but any momentum was quickly shut down by Miami’s front seven, which consi...

Florida Tops Nation for Most Dangerous Intersections, New Study Finds

Image
MIAMI, Florida ( FLAN 35 ) —  Florida has been ranked as the state with the most dangerous intersections in America, according to a new December 2025 traffic safety study analyzing fatal crashes nationwide. The research, conducted by Law Bear using data from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, reviewed fatal intersection crashes across all 50 states over a five-year period from 2019 to 2023. States were ranked based on the total number of deadly crashes occurring at intersections — areas where vehicles, pedestrians, and cyclists frequently cross paths. Florida ranked first with 10,017 fatal crashes at intersections during the study period. That averages out to nearly five deadly intersection crashes every day. The most dangerous intersection in the state was identified as U.S. 441 and 35th Street in Miramar, where multiple crashes involved as many as 12 vehicles. California ranked second with 8,404 fatal intersection crashes, followed by Texas with 7,818. ...

The Trading Card Mania

Image
PORT SAINT LUCIE, Florida ( FLAN 35 )- Many have heard or already on the Pok émon Card trend, but what if I told you there is another card game that is a sleeping giant and based on the biggest anime in the world?  That's right, One Piece has a trading card game. Many "Pok ébro's" are already adopting One Piece causing the price in rare cards to spike. One Piece cards seem to be more scarce than  Pok émon cards. It has been months since I personally have seen any One Piece Cards in store. I have seen  Pok émon more often than I have seen One Piece. Not only is One Piece collectible, it is an extremely popular competitive game. The regionals event in Miami had over 500 players participating.  Players who participate in local or regionals tournaments typically get a pack of cards for entering, and if you place top three you get extra winning packs on top of that! Cards can be extremely lucrative. The card shown in the video above is currently sitting between $500 and ...

Falcons Stun Buccaneers 29–28 in Thursday Night Thriller at Raymond James

Image
TAMPA BAY, Florida ( FLAN 35 ) —  The Tampa Bay Buccaneers rolled into Thursday night wearing their iconic creamsicle uniforms, knowing a loss to the 4–9 Atlanta Falcons could sink their playoff hopes. By the end of the night, that fear became reality. Atlanta escaped Raymond James Stadium with a 29–28 walk-off win, shifting the NFC South picture and leaving Tampa in a tight postseason bind. Tampa (now 7–7) opened strong, punching in a late first-quarter rushing touchdown from No. 44 to grab early momentum. The Falcons quickly answered in the second quarter behind the chemistry of Kirk Cousins and tight end Kyle Pitts. The duo connected twice for touchdowns, exposing Tampa’s defense and flipping the game in Atlanta’s favor. Two Buccaneers field goals kept things close, and the teams entered halftime with Atlanta ahead 14–13. The third quarter belonged to Tampa—eventually. Baker Mayfield and Bucky Irvin struggled to find rhythm early, but a huge strike to Mike Evans sparked...

Can Teddy Bridgewater’s Former Team Win Another Florida State Title?

Image
MIAMI, Florida ( FLAN 35 ) —  Teddy Bridgewater may no longer be on the headset, but the program he helped elevate is knocking on the door of another championship run — and the big question across South Florida football circles is whether they can finish the job again this season. Bridgewater’s former team made headlines last year with a dominant postseason push, capturing the Florida Class 3A state championship behind a disciplined, fast, and physical style that reflected his leadership.  Even with a new coaching staff in place, many of the core pieces from that title team are still on the roster, giving this group a realistic shot at repeating. They will have to beat Raines (Jacksonville) to pull off the back to back feat. They play Friday, December 12. FLAN 35 News will provide coverage of the State finals. Review: ESPN’s “30 for 30: Stuart Scott” — A Legacy That Still Pushes Us Forward

Image
MIAMI, Florida ( FLAN 35 ) —  ESPN’s latest 30 for 30 on Stuart Scott doesn’t just revisit a career — it holds up a mirror to anyone working in journalism, especially Black journalists who grew up watching him change the language and look of sports media. The film lands with a mix of inspiration, accountability, and emotion. It forces you to ask: Am I doing everything I can with the platform I have? What stands out most is how the documentary blends his professional rise with the personal archives he recorded over the years. The old home videos — Stuart joking with his daughters, reflecting privately, or simply being himself — add a human layer that makes the film feel less like a biography and more like an intimate family story we were lucky to be invited into. The documentary makes clear how disruptive his presence truly was. He didn’t just fit into sports media; he reshaped it, giving Black journalists space to sound like themselves without apology. His voice opened doors that...
