Falcons Stun Buccaneers 29–28 in Thursday Night Thriller at Raymond James

TAMPA BAY, Florida (FLAN 35) — The Tampa Bay Buccaneers rolled into Thursday night wearing their iconic creamsicle uniforms, knowing a loss to the 4–9 Atlanta Falcons could sink their playoff hopes. By the end of the night, that fear became reality. Atlanta escaped Raymond James Stadium with a 29–28 walk-off win, shifting the NFC South picture and leaving Tampa in a tight postseason bind.

Tampa (now 7–7) opened strong, punching in a late first-quarter rushing touchdown from No. 44 to grab early momentum. The Falcons quickly answered in the second quarter behind the chemistry of Kirk Cousins and tight end Kyle Pitts. The duo connected twice for touchdowns, exposing Tampa’s defense and flipping the game in Atlanta’s favor. Two Buccaneers field goals kept things close, and the teams entered halftime with Atlanta ahead 14–13.

The third quarter belonged to Tampa—eventually. Baker Mayfield and Bucky Irvin struggled to find rhythm early, but a huge strike to Mike Evans sparked life into the offense. After a penalty-assisted march inside the red zone, Mayfield found No. 82 for the go-ahead score. Moments later, following a Bijan Robinson fumble, Mayfield hit No. 14 for another touchdown. A successful two-point conversion to the same receiver pushed the Bucs up 28–14.

From there, chaos. Robinson redeemed himself with a fourth-quarter touchdown, though the two-point try failed. An Alfred interception on Mayfield gave Atlanta new life, and despite 18 overwhelming penalties, the Falcons kept pushing. Pitts delivered again—hauling in a reviewed, upheld touchdown to bring Atlanta within two. Another failed conversion kept Tampa ahead 28–26.

With playoff stakes tightening—around an 80% chance with a win, and barely 30% with a loss—the Bucs just needed one last stop. They didn’t get it. Cousins led a poised final drive and set up the game-winning field goal, leaving Mayfield helpless on the sideline as time expired.

The 29–28 loss reshapes the NFC South, putting Carolina in the driver’s seat and leaving Tampa’s postseason dreams hanging by a thread.
